It's important to realize that it is possible to master fear instead of letting fear be the masater and this does happen. Unfortunately, there are times that fear can be so overwhelm a person and become a full-blown phobia. The name itself means a morbid fear as it comes from the Greek god Phobos who was worshipped to scare enemies away. Phobias have been around for awhile because hydrophobia, a fear of water, was first identified by a Roman physician named Celsus who diagnosed it as a debilitating effect of rabies.
Presently, the American Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic and Statistical Manual III (DSM-III) have five symptoms for phobias. To refuse to face the object feared no matter how much other persuade is a symptom. If fear of the object is greater than any harm it can do, it could be a phobia. Miniscule contact or mere glimpses of what are feared leads to sheer fright is a symptom. Should you still be finding ways to get away even if what you're afraid of is nowhere in sight is a symptom. Finally, if you rearrange your entire schedule just to avoid what you fear, that's a symptom.
